Plastic Waste in the Ocean - Norway

Which of the C’s did you choose?

We worked with all the C’s, especially Citizenship, Creativity and Collaboration.

Why did you choose them? (What did you want the students to develop?)

Citizenship: awareness for and explore the global problem of plastic waste in the ocean, have genuine interests to solve a complex world problem, empathy to care for all the creatures in the ocean, think as a global citizen with a global responsibility.

Creativity: find a good way to express/visualise the problem of plastic in the ocean in art. Find also a name for the art project that applies to the common man. Find possible solutions for the climate problem of plastic waste.

Collaboration: Work together in teams to make a final product: make decisions together, managing team dynamics

Which activities did you selected to support the development of these C’s?

  • Created awareness on the topic trough documentaries, news reports and discussions.

  • Visit from the local garbage company.

  • Collected ocean trash at the shore.

  • Looked at examples of art made of garbage.

  • Divided pupils in groups where they worked together to find ideas for their own design.

  • They drew plans and got help from a local artist.

  • Searched in the big trash pal and found what they needed, and made their own sculpture and found a

    good title.

  • Made an exhibition where the other classes, teachers and parents were invited.

  • After the school vernissage, some of the sculptures (the winning ones) are exhibited at the local library

    for the whole summer.

How did you experience the impact of the activities on the students?

The students were very involved at the topic. After they saw the documentary, they were really motivated. They felt that they did an important job at the beach, and they have developed the right attitudes regarding the global problem. They now also know how to take care of their own garbage in the best possible way. They realised they can make a difference if we stand together! And even in a fun and creative way!
